What causes power line surges?
Thunderstorms and lightning are the most dramatic and
destructive causes of power line problems. However, downed utility poles,
birds, or even large industrial motors switching on and off can create
power surges. In the Lower Florida Keys, electrical problems and bad
weather to the North of our service territory also contribute to voltage
fluctuations.
Can these surges cause damage?
Yes, today's computerized appliances and electronics can
be damaged or destroyed by overvoltage surges. Large appliances like
air conditioners or refrigerators are less susceptible but can be damaged
as well. Surges can damage appliances like refrigerators, washers, dryers,
fans, dishwashers, and ovens.
Ultra-sensitive electronic equipment - like TV's, VCR's,
and computers - need additional protection. Some manufacturers say to
unplug their products every time lightning threatens.
Can a surge harm my equipment if I am not using it?
Yes, many electrical devices have electronic timers, clocks,
or remote controls, which remain in operation even when it is not in
use. Also, some appliances cycle off and on at random like air conditioners,
water heaters, pumps, or refrigerators, and they could be on during
a surge.
How can I prevent power surge damage?
We recommend the use of surge protection devices.
Won't my circuit breakers protect my equipment?
No, a common AC circuit breaker's reaction time is simply
not quick enough.
How do the meter based units work?
The device installs directly into your meter box to reduce
externally generated surges, including indirect lighting strikes on
the line, to a safer level.
Do the Power Sentry devices handle all voltage problems?
No, though they do handle the most frequent and destructive
ones. More sophisticated technologies (i.e. hybrid powered conditioners
and uninterruptible power systems) are on the market to handle complex
power problems.
Is there a guarantee?
Our equipment is tested and approved by the Power Research
Lab. Failure rates were less than a tenth of 1%. Also, the manufacturer
offers a guarantee. If your equipment fails, the manufacturer will inspect
and evaluate the equipment and possibly pay for repairs and replacements.
How do I purchase these surge protectors?
Call Keys Energy Services at (305) 295-1000. You may
make arrangements for Keys Energy Services to deliver and install the
meter based units.
